Semeru is one of the active volcanoes in Indonesia. It is the highest mountain in the island of Java. It is popularly known as Mahameru or the Great Mountain in the local dialect. Semeru is also a popular tourist spot in the country. 

Semeru in Indonesia is located in the coastal plains of the island of Java. It is a very steep volcano and consists of crater lakes around the summit. Semeru is a stratovolcano and is located in the southern part of the Tengger Volcanic Complex. The volcano rises to a height of around 3676 meters. According to mythology, the volcano derives its name from Sumeru, which is the central world mountain according to the Buddhist cosmology. 

Semeru, Indonesia has experienced plenty of eruptions. At least 55 eruptions have taken place since the year 1818. Around 10 of the eruptions caused destructions and fatalities. The eruptions are mostly moderate and consist of both lava flows and pyroclastic flows. There have also been mudflows and secondary mud flows at times. From the year 1967 to the present time, Semeru has experienced near constant eruptions with small eruptions taking place over a period of 10 minutes. The most recent eruption occurred in the year 2000. 

Semeru in Indonesia is a major tourist destination. It is also an attraction for trekkers and adventure lovers. Trekking and hiking trips are undertaken on the volcano. The trekking trips start from the village of Rano Pani and head north. Various travel agencies organized trip to the Semeru. The travelers are accompanied by expert guides who assist them in need.
